Cycling on the road can become a bit repetitive. Fortunately there are great places to cycle around London that offer greenery and cycle routes appropriate for children, including some that are completely car-free.
Parks
You can cycle through most of London’s parks as long as you follow the rules on which lane to use. You can cycle in Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Green Park, St. James’ Park, Regents Park, Victoria Park and Battersea Park - among others!
Click here for a more detailed guide.
Richmond Park
Richmond Park is London’s largest enclosed park and probably the most naturally beautiful - there is even a large population of wild deer!
The park offers several miles of road and off-road riding and it is a very popular destination for cyclists, especially on the weekend.
The park is easily accessible from Richmond station and you can take your bike on both the Overground and District lines.
You can also hire bikes at the park.
Bike Buddies
If you would like an experienced cyclist to help show you some nice cycle routes around your local area, please ask us about our Bike Buddies scheme.
Lee Valley Velopark
The Lee Valley cycling centre has on and off road tracks and a BMX circuit. The road-circuit ‘Pay and ride’ sessions are £5 for an adult and do not require booking. However, check their website calendar before travelling as sometimes the circuit is closed for private events or maintenance.
There are also a lot of very good free cycle routes around the Lee Valley area. Click here for free cycle routes that will take you around historic landmarks, canals and forests.
Bikes are available to hire and the park is accessible from Stratford station on the Underground and the Overground.
Redbridge Cycling Centre
Redbridge Cycling Centre is next to Hainault Forest Country Park, a half hour cycle from Romford station.
The centre has a road-circuit, a mountain bike track and a BMX circuit. The entrance fee is usually £4.60 for an adult and £3.00 for a child, depending on which circuit you want to use.
Bike hire is available.
The centre is open daily, but check the website calendar as the circuits may be closed for racing events.
